I always thought the bigger question was whether Jayson Werth will do to the Orioles what Jay Gibbons did to the Blue Jays. It's true that the O's were none too patient with Towers, and I suspect that it will come back to haunt them a little. I always thought that Werth would be a bigger star. That may not be, but his contributions - if he's healthy - will now be to the LA Dodgers.

Josh Towers had the unfortunate weight of the #35 to wear on his back. We just lost Mike Mussina, who wore the same number, and the O's were looking for a control pitcher to pass the jersey along to. Towers did not have the control that Mussina once displayed, as he could hit a dime on home plate when he first arrived in Baltimore. Towers was an unfortunate sacrifice on the alter of the baseball god's for debacle that losing #35 was.

I don't foresee the current front office making the same mistake and they will cultivate these young arms we have now. DuBose was looking my-T-fine yesterday and Riley has been near spotless. Most impressive!

I think that Werth will be a pretty good player, perhaps an everyday player with the right team, but probably not the All-Star that people once projected he'd be. Werth has less power than Gibbons, but walks more and has more speed. If he gets enough playing time in L.A. to get acclimated to big-leage pitching, he'll probably be about an average corner outfielder. It's likely that he'll have a better career than John Bale, the man the Orioles got back from the Blue Jays, or Gary Matthews Jr., the guy the Orioles got from the Mets for Bale. Not sure yet about Jason Frasor, the guy the Blue Jays got for Werth.

I'll have to disagree with Jeff about Towers's control. Towers has excellent control—that is his best asset. He may be one of the few pitchers who can match Mussina's precision. The problem with Towers is that he doesn't have the stuff to put hitters away. As a result, he is vulnerable to damage from hits—home runs in particular. So unless he comes up with an "out" pitch, I don't think he'll ever be more than a fifth starter or long relief guy in the majors.

In 2002, Towers also was pitching injured, yet kept his condition hidden from the Orioles. That helps explain his horrible stats that year. I think that the Orioles might have given him more of a chance had they known he was not 100% healthy that year. But I don't think it would have made a difference in the end.
